Mar Gregorios Rehabilitation Centre (MGRCB)

Mar Gregorios Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind (MGRCB) is a charitable organization under the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and is engaged in the rehabilitation of poor persons with disabilities (PWDs). It was started in 1983 by the late lamented Philipose Mar Theophilus Metropolitan as a project of MGOCSM, the student wing of the Church. At that time the plan was to look after poor visually impaired (VI) people only. Later, in 1993, the services were extended to cover people with other types of disabilities such as orthopedically handicapped (OH), hearing impaired (HI) and mentally challenged (MC). The area of operation at present consists of four grama panchayats around Trivandrum city viz., Aruvikkara, Karakulam, Vellanad and Vilappil and also portions of Trivandrum Corporation which were previously Vattiyoorkavu and Kudappanakunnu panchayats, covering a total area of 114 sq. kilometers. The unique feature of MGRCB is that the rehabilitation work is community based, which enables the beneficiaries to live and work in their own homes and environment.
